Social Research Master – Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam)
Officiële omschrijving
The Faculty of Social Sciences at VU University Amsterdam offers a two-year Master’s programme in Social Research. The programme’s general aim is to equip ambitious and outstanding students to become fully trained social researchers in one of the five domains: Anthropology, Communication Science, Organization Sciences, Political Science or Sociology. This programme teaches you how social research should be conducted. You will be taught how to approach and interview people in order to obtain useful data, and how to analyse and interpret this data to explain social processes and developments. Although the programme will furnish you with a wide range of opportunities, its main aim is to teach you how to carry out scientific research at a university or within advanced research institutes.

Intensive and interdisciplinary
The programme will provide you with intensive training in your chosen domain while also encouraging interdisciplinary education. Not only will you receive full training as an empirical researcher in your preferred field but you will also be expected to minor in another discipline. Together with students from all five domains, you will participate in joint methodology and presentation seminars.
Qualitative and quantitative approach
The programme trains you in both qualitative and quantitative modes of enquiry and adheres to the belief that the basic model of scientific inquiry, whether qualitative or quantitative, is that of a comparative research design, explicit theory formulation and systematic empirical observation.
Flexible programme and expert staff
The programme is flexible, internationally oriented and offers a wide range of options. Our students benefit from training in frequent small-scale seminars (max. 25 participants) in which dedicated tutors provide intensive advice and supervision. Our highly qualified staff include such prominent names as Ruud Koopmans and Harry Ganzeboom.
